Menstrual Health Hygiene: Everything you need to Know

Menstrual Health Hygiene: Everything you need to Know

Let’s talk about periods. Not as a taboo, but as a natural part of life that deserves open conversations and informed choices. Because when we talk freely about menstrual health, we give every woman the chance to feel seen, safe and supported.

What Do the Numbers Say About Menstrual Hygiene in India?

A descriptive cross-sectional study published by BMC Women’s Health gives us some eye-opening insights. Conducted among college-going women in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, the study found that a whopping 96.3% of participants used sanitary pads as their main method of menstrual hygiene. Out of these, 98.6% used disposable pads, and over 50% of them were non-biodegradable. Surprisingly, 16.5% of the women didn’t even know whether the pads they used were biodegradable or not. This data reveals a bigger picture of the choices Indian women still prefer to make.

Now here’s something that might surprise you even more: only 1.4% used modern menstrual methods like menstrual cups and tampons, with 1.3% choosing cups and just 0.1% using tampons. Even though menstrual cups are safe, reusable and eco-friendly, their adoption rate remains painfully low. Cultural discomfort and lack of awareness are some of the main reasons behind this gap.

With all that in mind, sanitary pads remain the most feasible option for a majority of Indian women. But here’s the catch. Many pads available in the market today contain synthetic materials, chemical fragrances and bleached plastics that can cause irritation, rashes and even long-term health issues.

The solution lies in choosing safer, toxin-free pads that are both gentle on your skin and kinder to the planet.

Why Menstrual Hygiene Needs More Attention

Personal hygiene during periods isn’t just a routine but a form of self-care. Practicing good habits reduces the risk of infections and helps you feel fresher and more confident. Whether it’s by changing pads every few hours or wearing breathable cotton undergarments, small steps can make a big difference.

In a world where we pay close attention to what goes into our skincare and what we use on our hair and body, it’s equally important to care for the products we use during our periods.

So why not bring the same gentle care into your menstrual hygiene routine? We’re soon bringing something thoughtfully crafted to surprise our Deyga women’s club because your period care deserves just as much love as your skincare.

Periods and Empowerment: Building a Healthier Future

Across India, various periods campaigns have done powerful work to shift how we talk about menstruation. From raising awareness in schools to distributing hygiene kits in rural areas, these initiatives have given young girls the confidence to manage their periods with dignity.

Periods and empowerment are deeply linked. When women and girls have access to safe products and the knowledge to use them well, they are more likely to attend school, work confidently and make informed health choices.

Together, let’s break the silence, ditch the shame and choose care that supports our body and our environment. Because menstrual health and hygiene aren’t optional, they’re essential.
